What to expect at your first consultation

A simple guide to preparing for your first visit so you can make the most of your time with the doctor.

Deciding to see a fertility doctor is a positive first step, and it is normal to feel a little unsure about what happens next. Here is a simple picture of a first consultation.

A conversation first. The visit usually starts with talking. The doctor will ask about your health, how long you have been trying to conceive, and any past treatment. There are no wrong answers. The more openly you share, the better the guidance.

Both partners matter. Fertility is a shared journey, and difficulty in conceiving can be related to either partner or both. That is why couples are encouraged to attend together, though you are welcome to come alone first.

Bring what you have. Previous test reports, prescriptions and notes are helpful. If you do not have any, do not worry; the doctor will explain which tests, if any, may be useful.

A clear plan. By the end of the visit, you should understand the next steps in simple language and feel free to ask any question.
